Kelly Rae, MDC Convenor and MC for the evening, welcomed everyone and explained that the event would be interactive, with opportunities to share ideas and strategise with others about championing social change.
The activities kicked off with “Elevator Pitch”, where audience members each pitched an idea to someone for 30 seconds to convince the other person that “all people should wear yellow on Mondays”. The arguments used were varied, creative and persuasive. Continue reading
Walk with Us: Djilpin Arts, the Northern Territory’s globally recognised Aboriginal Corporation located at the remote Beswick (Wugularr) community on the south-west border of Arnhem Land, brings a rich and ancient tapestry of indigenous culture to Federation Square on Thursday 22 & Friday 23 May.
The two day Walk With Us festival showcases traditional song and dance, the first solo exhibition from innovative fibre artist Dorothy Bienuwanga– New Works in Fibre and etchings, silk screens and Japanese woodblock limited edition fine art prints from North-East and West Arnhem Land artists – The Gapu Print Survey – Billabong Series,and the world premiere of Kundirri, a documentary on the life and legacy of artist, musician and custodian, David Blanasi.

The Brisbane Development Circle and the Future of Aid

On February 27 Brisbane Development Circle (BDC) partnered with The Edge, part of the State Library of Queensland, to present an event called “The Future of Australian Aid”. BDC started the year’s program of events talking about the shifting environment in development at a local, national and international level and what this means for our own practice, the sector and the communities that will be impacted. While we don’t have the answers to all these questions, we began with what we already knew and started to think about the way forward and our resilience as a sector.

On Friday 14 March at Federation Square, Australians will gather together for a vigil to stand with the people of Syria.
The conflict in Syria is the worst humanitarian crisis of the 21st Century. More than 100,000 people have been killed in the conflict, including 11,000 children. 2.5 million people are living as refugees. Continue reading
Students unite to debate global affairs

From the 21st to 23rd of February, students from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland gathered at La Trobe University to take part in the second annual Victorian Model United Nations conference. Under the theme of Access and Action, students looked into the barriers people face globally on accessing their inalienable human rights.
Beginning in March 2014, the Melbourne Development Circle is publishing a member review of our events. This review has both a profile of the member and a little information about the event for us to look back on. Our first member review is from Wendy Poussard, co-founder of the International Women’s Development Agency.

Inspiring Change: Celebrate International Women’s Day with the Humanitarian Crisis Hub

You are invited to Humanitarian Crisis Hub’s International Women’s Day celebration events, as part of our Women Leading Change program.
In both Melbourne and Sydney, we will be bringing together diaspora women and their organisations to talk on the contribution that women make to building peace, human rights and development in their countries of origin, particularly countries affected by war and conflict. We will be celebrating International Women’s Day under the theme of Inspiring Change.
We would very much welcome your participation and contribution, so please do come along and enjoy the afternoon with us. It will be a chance to hear more about what diaspora women activists and organisations are doing from Australia and how they can be better supported by aid agencies, civil society and government in their work.
Our Women Leading Change network seeks to support women from diaspora communities who are campaigning for human rights and peace in their communities in Australia and in their country of origin. We support them with advocacy strategy development, how to engage the media, organisational development and networking opportunities to link in with the government and humanitarian sector.
The Humanitarian Crisis Hub works in Australia with people from countries affected by war and conflict who promote the human rights of people in their countries of origin. We support diaspora community initiatives; provide resources, information and training; facilitate dialogue and shared learning; build networks; and seek to amplify community voices at local, national and international levels.
